Give Gifts: Cherish Yourself

Famous line Saying, “It’s better to give than to receive”.

On seeing this quote, I started googling on why this has been written and the myth behind this line.

Psychologically, the neurochemical drivers of happiness in our brain, which are Dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin make up the Happiness Trifecta. Any activity that increases the production of these neurochemicals will cause a boost in happiness mood. These chemical releases on giving the gifts.

Serotonin is an important chemical and neurotransmitter in the human body. It is believed to help regulate mood and social behaviour, appetite and digestion, sleep, memory.

Dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter—a chemical released by neurons (nerve cells) to send signals to other nerve cells. The brain includes several distinct dopamine pathways, one of which plays a major role in the motivational component of reward-motivated behavior.

Oxytocin is among the most ancient of our neurochemicals and has a powerful effect on the brain and the body. When oxytocin begins to flow, blood pressure decreases social fears are reduced and trust and empathy are enhanced. Oxytocin is also an anti-inflammatory and reduces pain and enhances wound healing.

Also, Endorphin releases to make feeling pleasure.

Apart from brain functioning. Recently, I was planning to give the gift to my sister in law who is servicing as a teacher. Initially,I had a lot of choices to give her a gift like mobile, Pen, Diary, Ornaments Collection and a lot. Considering all this, I was befuddled to go for the right present. I took some time; I put my mind into deep thinking and spend time on about knowing her liking and interest. I thought logically to select on the gift from the choices. If I select the mobile phone, she would not use greatly since most of the time she spends for family and teaching. With Pen, She might have got that gift from her students. With Book, She already has pile of books to read  to enrich her knowledge to take the class. With Ornaments, She always like diamond to wear and I don’t have that much penny to spend for this gift. Maybe,I can think about this gift option after becoming a billionaire. And with Watch, I felt its right choice as she always wants to stick to the time to take classes and to manage both family and work.

Giving the gift straightway, this is usual. To make it different, I put the wrapped gift in her handbag which usually takes it to work. The moment I was not completely me, I was thinking long time on how she is going to react after seeing the gift until she texted me as ‘Maai(Sister), I really love the gift. Thanks dear!’

The Epic fact that “the gift is the real symbol of quality over quantity, the value of thought over any amount of expenditure”. When we are selecting the gift, we give more of their preference than our preference. We get good experience in handling the situation like thinking about their shoes and taking the wise decision at the right time.
